PhilanthroPunks 2017

All the punk rock you can handle for a fiver! Ali Keane of The Scuts, Sober Dave of The Drunken Ramblings and Livy Star Promotions have teamed up to organize PhilanthroPunks 2017, an all day punk rock benefit show at New Cross Inn featuring 13 bands on Saturday, November 25. All proceeds from the gig will go to Glass Door HomelessCharity, a non-government funded West London charity that not only saves lives by providing refuge from the cold, they also help their guests build more stable futures.

The first annual PhilanthroPunks gig this November will feature co-headliners TheScuts and The Drunken Ramblings, who will be pairing up with some of the most promising up and coming bands of the punk rock spectrum from London and beyond, including Kilburn Bomb Squad, The Deckchairs, Playground Circus, Shocks of Mighty, Fifteen Years, She Bit Me First, Skiv, The Repeelers, Demon Smiles, Three Chords and a Lie, and AshLewis. This is raw, passionate and almost primitive rock’n’roll music returning to the stage at New Cross Inn, and will be something special and personal for everyone in the room.

In addition to live music, there will also be boutique-style tables set up from the bands playing the event, who have all pledged to top up the money collected at the door by giving a percentage of all their merchandise sales that day. Tiny Little CreaturesRecording Company will also have a table set up selling some of their releases, and as a special treat for this event they have put together a digital compilation playlist which can be purchased here — https://tinylittlecreatures.bandcamp.com/album/philanthropunks-2017. Proceeds from the compilation sales will also be going towards the charity. As an extra bonus for the event, Fifth Column T-shirts screen printers have generously donated 50 limited edition PhilanthroPunks shirts that will be sold to anyone who wishes to purchase one, and all the proceeds of those sales will also go towards the Glass Door charity.

Glass Door will have a collection bin available for any clothing donations patrons want to bring to the event — brand new socks and mens winter coats/jackets of all sizes are always welcome and greatly appreciated. There will also be a bucket going around for any extra coins and notes anyone has that they will want to donate to the charity throughout the day.

Tickets can be bought on the door the day of the event or via the New Cross Inn website — http://www.newcrossinn.com/product/philanthropunks-2017/

They have a drop-in day center from 9-2 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays for those who suffer from homelessness to eat, shower, do laundry, pick up new clothing, and meet with case workers dedicated to doing everything they can to give them a better life. Glass Door not only saves lives by providing refuge from the cold they also help their guests build more stable futures. do incredible work and can continue doing so with everyone’s help to donate some money. Decades: In Memoriam, a tribute to Ian Curtis and Joy Division

An Alternative Gathering and Sowilo Media are delighted to present an EIGHT band extravaganza, with music that both represents the Joy Division era and the present, with of course a Joy Division set to boot. A true celebration of music and spirit!

Featuring:

Morgellons – A Post-Punk vision of the future whilst embracing the past … Taking the blueprint of bands like Joy Division and Magazine, the frozen intensity of early Banshees and the art-school nihilism of the Velvets through to the Stooges, Morgellons have created a sound that, although rooted in a rich musical past, has a relevance and urgency that marks them out as something very different from their peers.

Naevus – A unique blending together of varying styles — industrial, folk, post punk — [think Swans, think Devoto, think Wire], Naevus formed in London in 1998 and released their debut “Truffles of Love” in 1999. The new album ‘Curses’ will be released this summer and this gig offers an exclusive chance to hear much of the new material live as appearances in London are very rare.

Transmission Control – This While Angels Watch side-project is an homage [rather than a tribute band] by fans of old, to the urgent, chaotic, inspired journey that Joy Division took us on, taking care to present authentic versions of the original songs often with musical and lyrical variations that were either performed, written or recorded by the band themselves, but without aping the characters or the moves.

1984 (Crisis) – Crisis were a British punk rock band formed in 1977. They performed at rallies for Rock Against Racism (RAR) and the Anti-Nazi League (ANL), and at Right to Work marches. British music weekly, Sounds used the phrase “Music to March To” to describe their distinctly edgy, controversial, alienated, political brand of punk rock. Now back in action with co-founder, Tony Wakeford and the moniker, 1984.

Absolute Beginners – This is not a tribute/cover band with 3 members wearing suits, this line up features a collection of well known punk musicians who want to pay homage to Weller’s music and to The Jam! “It’s all about not trying to look like the Jam, 3 lads in black suits, playing Weller’s songs note for note, we play our own interpretations of them, with our own energy and enthusiasm.”

Underclass UK – Adding a street punk edge to the evening with their blue collar outlook on the world with a sound that doesn’t hide from its metal or glam roots. Comparisons to Cockney Rejects are not without warrant. Also fans of Joy Division, they will repectfully be playing a number at the show, their way.

Holy Faction – From the ashes of ‘Jonestown’ comes this north west London trio playing funky-post-punk material that captures the essence of Magazine, the groove of Killing Joke and a hint of Wire, alongside a magic all of their own.

Metropolis – An alternative, synth driven post-punk rock band from East Anglia who write and perform retro-futurist music with a dystopian slant. Their inspiration comes from bands such as Killing Joke, Hawkwind, Numan and Joy Division to name just a few.
